About the artist:

Kees Scherer 1920-1993, born in an alcove house in the Jordaan area of Amsterdam, started photographing early. Immediately after the liberation, he became a freelance photographer for newspapers such as Het Vrije Volk, Trouw, de Volkskrant and Algemeen Dagblad. In 1955 he was also the co-founder of World Press Photo.

In 1987, to establish his work, friends founded the FotoArchief Kees Scherer Foundation. Partly as a result of this, his work was rediscovered in the 1990s, and reissued in three, now long sold out, books.
