About the book:

In Surf Tribe , photographer Stephan Vanfleteren shows that surfing culture is much more than just competitive sport. Surfing is also and above all about a deep respect for the ocean, about the feeling of nullity towards the forces of nature, about won and lost battles with others and with themselves.

Vanfleteren looks beyond the traditional surf spots of California and Hawaii and goes in search of people all over the world who live in places where the ocean touches the land. He establishes a fluid community that has nature as its only leader.

He portrays young talent as well as living icons and old legends, both competition surfers and freesurfers. In this book you will not find action photos on azure waves, but you will find serene black-and-white portraits in Vanfleteren's well-known, captivating style. He shows the real people behind the surfers, in all their strength and vulnerability. This series of images penetrates to the true core of surfing culture: the love of the water, the addiction to the wave, the passion for surfing.

With more than three hundred portraits of Kelly Slater, Gerry Lopez, John John Florence, Laird Hamilton, Bethany Hamilton, Greg Noll, Stephanie Gilmore, Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Mickey Munoz, Filipe Toledo and Tom Carroll, among others. - With a preface by surfing legend Gerry Lopez.

About the artist:

Stephan Vanfleteren (b. 1969) traveled the world over to document this global tribe, capturing anyone from local heroes to global superstars. Instead of the action shots one would expect, Vanfleteren presents these surfers in the idiosyncratic black and white portraits he is so well known for. The serenity of his images mirrors the calm of the surfers, often accompanied by nothing but their boards. The serenity of Vanfleteren’s images mirrors the calm of his subjects when they are faced with immense danger, when — for a brief moment — board, rider, and the vast ocean become one.
